Olympics are right up our street
With the buzz around the Olympics reaching fever pitch, its been really interesting seeing how the key sponsors have been using the web to extend their marketing. One example that caught my attention over the last few weeks has been BA’s ‘right up your street‘ campaign. The TV ad itself is interesting because counter-intuitively, the airline are asking its customers not to fly during the games but to stay at home and cheer Team GB to victory!
Cleverly, they have combined this activity with social media via Facebook, commissioning an interactive version of the TV ad that was released first. The interactive video allows people to type in their postcodes and see their street within the ad (rendered from Google Map images) through the window of the 747 as it makes its way to the Olympic park. This became an internet hit with over 250,000 people viewing their own customised version, and built up the hype about the ad before it was ever aired on TV. This interactivity is also clever as it adds an extra dimension; bringing you right into the heart of the action. Because you don’t know when your street will appear, you also watch much more intently. The quality of the production is as high as you would expect with BA’s commercials, and it’s probably the closest any of us will get to appearing in a TV advert! Check it out…
